Public Archaeological Consulting and Research
Public archaeology is a branch of archaeological work that is centered around engaging and involving the public in archaeological research and knowledge.
Living Layers Public Archaeological Consulting and Research is an Edmonton-based and Indigenous owned educational consulting company focused on developing community-centered archaeological education and resources. We work collaboratively with organizations, schools, Indigenous communities, and local groups to design programs that reflect specific goals, audiences, and heritage.
Our approach is rooted in listening first. Every project begins with understanding what a community wants to share, learn, or achieve. From there, we co-create tailored educational programs, workshops, interpretive materials, and public engagement strategies that are meaningful, accessible, and adaptable to different contexts.
Rather than applying one-size-fits-all models, Living Layers builds resources that respond directly to community needs—whether that means curriculum development, hands-on programming, heritage interpretation, or creative approaches to heritage storytelling.
We believe archaeology is most powerful when it is shared. By working alongside communities, we support the development of programs that not only communicate the past, but also strengthen identity, connection, and stewardship in the present.
